[This takes place before any team gets stranded on any planet]
It hadn’t come as a surprise to her that no one had mentioned anything to her dad, the great Rodney McKay (or so the man liked to call himself), about Atlantis personnel having a day off, so therefore it hadn’t come as any surprise that he’d taken up yelling at poor Zelenka about the lack of information that was getting across. As she passed the two in a corridor, she heard her dads voice lower, obviously seeing her coming their way and Zelenka cast a wink her way, then an eye roll at her father and she gave a tiny smile and nod in return. As she kept walking she could feel her dad, who had obviously caught the exchange, staring at her with a mix of surprise and curiosity at her and then the yelling continued, this time the conversation was a different topic.
With a sigh and a small laugh Kaylee headed up the stairs towards the Jumper Bay and stopped, doing a complete U-turn, an idea coming to her suddenly. While her dad was busy running Zelenka’s ear off, his lab was free for exploring. The lab itself was the same as any laboratory you could find on Atlantis. Same floor, same wall, same lab tables, nothing different. Except, except that this lab was Rodney’s lab, her dads lab, one filled with things only him and his team were really allowed to be working on. Sure she’d seen it before, her dad wouldn’t hesitate to explain what he was doing, or a new discovery he’d made, but she wanted to explore the underbelly of it, things he didn’t talk about or things he was working on. The mystery of his lab pushed her forwards and as if she was a teenager again, sneaking behind her parents back, which technically was what she was doing, she glanced around before heading in the direction of a transporter.
It wasn’t long before Kaylee was standing out front her dads lab, her eyes staring at it with curiosity and wonder. Waving her hand over what was a very interesting way of having a door open, she listened to the hiss of it slide and click back as it disappeared into the wall. Looking back and forth she took a step inside, closed her eyes and heard the door shut behind her. Finally, she was home free. Moving forward towards the first computer she hit a power key and heard the computer hum to life. The sound itself made Kaylee instantly relax and she sunk down into a chair that was clearly moulded just for her dad. Shifting a little she rested her elbow against the desk and tapped her slender fingers against the side of the laptop.
“C’mon,” she whispered, an air of annoyance in her tone. “I don’t have all day.” Suddenly Kaylee sat up, a prickle sensation running up and down her back and she became very still. Someone else was in the lab. Reaching for the nearest item she could use for a weapon, she snatched it and turned in her seat quickly. Brandishing a screwdriver in front of her she stared at the man who was in the lab with her, a man she didn’t recognize, but then again, she didn’t recognize very many people in Atlantis, yet.
“Who are you?!” she said, staring at him, trying to hide any hint of fear. “What are you doing here?”
