Sweat rolled down her back, but she didn’t mind, after living eighteen years in the sticky humidity that was know as a Southern Summer she learn to deal with the heat. It was a comfort; even though Moody was only a few miles away, nothing compared to being home with her family.
The worm screen door groaned, Kata didn’t look over from where she sat on the porch swing, she kept staring out into the yard, not to far off in the distance she could see the heat lightening, flashing every so often like runway lights on a dark night. “Your father would be so proud of you, you know that right?” her mother slowly walked across the porch to the railing, “We are all proud of you,” she added, her eyes watching the last fireflies dance thru the dark. Kata smiled and stood to go stand beside her mother, “Ya’ll raised me.... all of us well,” she replied leaning against the rail like her mother.
The older woman shrugged, silence filled the space between the two for a couple of minutes, muted thunder sounded from a few miles away. “Looks like anotha storm tonight,” Kata nodded, “That’s one thing I’ll miss about this place, summers hot and winters not so bad. I don’t know about Colorado… or where I’m headed,”
Her mother turned to face her, “Now if you go anywhere else you write me, you hear?” she said her voice firm, Kata nodded, “Yes ma’am, No ma’am I will not pull another trick like I did, with telling you about where I was stationed till Christmas,” Stupid thing she did waiting to tell her mother she was in Europe in route to the Middle East, the memory of the phone call came to mind. Not pretty.
“Good. Now would you like me to pack some of the leftovers from tonight, Meg said she didn’t want to take the chicken home, and if you don’t take it then the boys will eat it, and I don’t know what type of food they have where ever your going”. That was typical of her mother, thirty years as a librarian and she couldn’t remember where a state was, but what could she expect of a woman who lived her whole life in a small town.
“I don’t think they will allow fried chicken and cream corn on a plane, let the boys take it,” she told her as a bolt of lighting cut across the darking sky. A cool breeze blew over the two women where they stood: the rain was about to come. Kata sensed her mothers posture stiffen, she was never one to let her children just go off with out her knowing, Kata new she wasn’t happy about her new assignment, but what could she do to change it?
Kata kept staring out into the darkness, her eyes watching the lightening each time it lit up the sky. She had once flown thru a storm to get her plane back to base, when she hit the tarmac it had started raining so hard she had to wait out the storm in the cockpit, hoping lightening didn’t hit her craft. A soft hand gently covered hers: “You promise to stay safe?” her mother whispered, Kata fought the urge to ask why she worried after all these years? But she didn’t, it was better to keep those kinds of thoughts to herself when it came to things that troubled her mother, Kata squeezed the veiny hand, “You know I can’t make promises, but you can have my word I will do my best to stay flying.” Her mother just nodded before turning and heading back inside.
Then it was only Kata again, thunder rumbled across the land, seconds later the first drops of rain started hitting the tin roof, she went back to the swing, sat down and looked out into the rain.
