Kaylee absentmindedly tapped along to a beat only she could hear, her fingertips causing vibrations of the coffee in her glass, mug. A small hum escaped just past her pursed lips, her eyes were closed and her head bobbed just a bit to the imaginary beat, a song that couldn’t escape her, one she’d heard in the gym when one of the personnel had been practicing there. The song wasn’t familiar in any way, but the beat had been catchy nonetheless.
Opening her eyes slowly, she stared vacantly around the lab, than shifted her gaze to the laptop in front of her, a word document pulled up. She was supposed to be analyzing data on Wraith Hive Ships and the cocoons they used to store humans in. Someone down the line of junior scientists had thought up the idea that if they were to create a substance that could break through the web-like restraints, without harming the individual stored in the alcove, they could get in the Hive, save lives and get back out again. A pipe dream at most, but if it saved lives, it was worth looking into and Kaylee had been given the fun job of searching through the database for Hive Ships and analyzing the information she found under Cocooning System.
With a stretch and a yawn she straightened up and looked around, the lab was almost empty, and for the morning that was quite unusual, almost eerie. Getting up off her seat, she cupped her mug in her hands and decided to trek the distance to the end of the hallway and get coffee. Her dad was picky and had made it an official rule that no food or drink would be brought into the labs when someone was on or off duty. Lucky for half the staff her dad was usually too busy to come and make sure everyone was living up to that rule, and so, for the most part, it was broken.
Heading down the hallway she glanced in each lab as she passed, in each one there was something different being overseen, studied or experimented on. A few of the lab techs were typing away on computers, a few were running scans on equipment, experimenting on Ancient technology (only the technology approved by her dad) and one had her stopping in her tracks. This lab was for weapons technology, but what they were studying looked like something she’d only seen in mission reports and in her nightmares.
“Be careful!” she barked, startling herself and the two young techs. “I don’t - !” No sooner had the words escaped her that she was cut off, an electric spark running down the metallic back of the replicator and then continuing on down its legs. For a minute the room was still, no one dared moved and then all hell broke loose. The replicator, almost looking like a metallic spider sprung to life, immediately replicating itself over and over again into a hundred of those nasty little critters. The room was filled the screams of panic and terror and before any of the techs could make it to the door the room automatically locked itself.
Kaylee took a step back, her heart was pounding heavily in her chest, her eyes were wide with terror and she could feel fear etching its way down her legs, immobilizing her to run. The sound of an alarm going off broke her stupor and she looked around for any signs of help, after all, she might be the only one alive to know what was going on in that lab...
