Kastiel looked at Cillina and gave her a cheeky grin, in his hands was the equivalent to there stun gun, a chunky peace of material, reasonably light, and batted around enough to be hand me down.
“I don’t know... you’d be surprised” He added on to that cheeky grin, as through he was answering a question of some kind.
“No, no, and... oh, no”
She jabbed back, rolling her eyes but unable to avoid giving off a slight grin to her team leader.
Kastiel laughed, shook his head and moved forward.
“We better hurry it up if we want to get back to the gate before nightfall – Kalintrik time”
His face was serious now, they all knew what it meant, being late was simply not an option... they would never get safe passage to there village then, it would be a death sentence.
“Alright troops, where moving out!”
He called out, there was a few grumps ‘hmpfs’ but everyone recognised the urgency in Kas’s voice. His right hand man... or girl in this instance, passed a step behind him to his right. The others where more disorganised, heads dropped as they concentrated in nothing more then there moving feet.
Kastiel gave a half grin to Cillina – the right hand man.
“Can’t handle a little sleep depriving by the looks of things”
He jabbed at her, but to his shock he realised she was just as tired as the rest. He knew he would be to, if his stomach wasn’t tied in such knots. Man, they where late, they where really late, they would have to truly pick up there pace now.
They reached the gate and Cillina immediately set to dialling, and Kas checked the others where out of range of the blue whip-lash the gate always gave off. After all, you did stupid things when you where tired. Happy that they where all fine his glance returned towards the gate, he watched it spinning and felt the wash of tiredness sweep over him. He shook his head from side to side, he had to be clear-thinking – who knew what they could be facing back home this late. His hands tensed over his bulky weapon as he struggled to stop his imagination getting out of hand.
The gate locked and blow outwards – they where safe to cross now, cross through that circle and reach another world, Kitra(equivalent of god) only knew just how far away.
“Alright, come on lads... and ladies”
He barked, winking at Cillina before jumping through the circle. He had to make sure they had safe passage, no crazy monsters where going to take down his men, not on his watch!
He jumped back, lifted his gun and scanned through the suddenly dim lightning. Maybe, just maybe... they could get home before the roaming started. He nodded his head to Cillina as she jumped through, and then – the strangest thing happened. He saw the beginning of the arms of each of his five men, stepping through in union, and the gate suddenly spasemmed, the blue pool vanished and reappeared like a mirage. This time, the men where gone.
“No!”
Kastiel screamed, his gentle blue eyes widening in shock and he was leaping for the dialling system before he was even aware of what he was doing. His hands jammed the buttons down with far more force then was nessasery, and then Cillina was by his side.
“It’s to late, I’m sorry, I’m sorry... we can’t save them”
She whispered, but he wasn’t listening, he fought against her, crying out. Because worst of all... he knew it was true. It was like his worst nightmare come true. The gate suddenly connected before he even finished dialling. A part of his mind must have known that it was the monsters, that they had fallen into a trap, but maybe it didn’t register... maybe he just didn’t care.
He leaped through the open gate, the voice of Cillina screaming behind him, and then all was lost in a pain of blue, before he rolled and finished, squatting on bent knees. He shook slightly and rose with a groan. It didn’t take a genius to see that this was a different planet. He groaned again, and realised that he must have Cillina to his death, as the gate had closed behind him. God... what had he done? He had screwed up, big time. He stood to his feet, but he didn’t seem to know what to do with himself. His eyes looked glazed – it was easy to see he was in shock. Maybe there had been nothing gory to see, but all that his mind could register was that it was his fault. his fault that his men, and his best friend(Cillina), where dead.
His eyes closed and he let out a soft breath before opening them again – calming himself down. Right, first thing he needed to do was figure out where he was, and find a place to bank down in till morning, his time. A glance told him it must be about dawn on this planet, and... by the looks of things, there was a village, which would be a nice enough place to collapse in for a few hours. Next thing he needed was to see if there where any people about...
